family: Serena is the only child to Charles Moon (a pure-blood wizard and former Slytherin) and Lyla Summerton (a muggle). A month after Serena was born Lyla filed for divorce from Charles, while also giving complete custody of Serena to her husband. Sortly after that, both Charles and Lyla both got remarried, Charles to his girlfriend from Hogwarts, and Lyla to an American artist. Charles and Katherine (his school years' girlfriend, as well as former Hufflepuff) have not had any other kids, as they are content with just having Serena; however Lyla had a second daughter, Carlie.
overall history: before hogwarts: Being born to a pure-blood father and a muggle mother didn’t really work out for Serena Mackenzie Moon. After a year of marriage between Charles Moon and Lyla Summerton, and having Serena, Serena’s parents filed for divorce. 7 months into Lyla’s pregnancy with Serena, she found out that her husband was a wizard and that is when the fighting started. Not wanting to raise a child that could possibly destroy everything, Lyla told Charles that once Serena was born, they would be getting a divorce and that Charles would be raising their daughter. Disappointed that his wife didn’t want to raise a half-blood witch, Charles reluctantly agreed to the divorce and raising Serena on his own. And true to her word, a month after Serena was born, which was March 10th, Lyla filed for divorce and let the court know that her husband would be raising the baby girl and that she didn’t want any visitation privileges, nor did she want any contact with her daughter when Serena got old enough.
A month after the divorce was finalized, both Charles and Lyla found other partners and both got re-married. Lyla married an artist from America named Jeremiah Conner Mathison and soon had another baby; a little girl named Carlie Mikayla Mathison. Charles reconnected with his girlfriend from his school years at hogwarts, a pure-blood witch named katherine michelle nott (the aunt of theodore nott, a future slytherin who was the same age as serena). and as per lyla’s requests, serena grew up for the first few years of her life not knowing that katherine wasn’t her biological mother.
the only thing that confused serena as she got older was that none of her features looked anything like katherine’s. and around her 4th birthday, serena asked her dad if katherine was her real mother. charles knew that he wouldn’t be able to lie to his daughter, and after calling katherine into the room, charles explained everything to serena. how he had been married once before katherine, to serena’s mother, who eventually found out that charles was a wizard and didn’t want to raise serena. after listening to what her dad was telling her, the only thing that serena could think of was that her mother didn’t love her, not even a little bit. after all, if you loved your child, why wouldn’t you want anything to do with her? running out of the room with tears in her eyes, serena couldn’t think straight. running as fast as her little 4 year old legs could carry her; serena just kept running toward her play room. the one room that was farthest away from the living room and everything that her dad had just told her.
a few minutes after hiding in her little plastic play house, serena heard someone enter the room. peaking out one of the small windows, serena saw that it was katherine who had followed her. crawling toward the door, serena opened it and called out to her mom. seeing the little girl that she loved as her own, katherine walked over to the play house and sat down outside and motioned for serena to come out. wiping away the tears with the back of her hand, serena took a few shaky steps towards katherine. wrapping her arms around her mom’s neck, serena cried a little bit more as katherine comforted the little girl. once serena was done crying, she pulled back and looked up at katherine and all she saw was love.
from that day on, serena didn’t even get her biological mother a second thought. she knew that she had a family that loved her and that was all that she needed. serena had a father and mother who would be able to teach her everything they could about magic and give her all of the love and adoration that she would need. not only that, but serena, charles and katherine lived right down the street from katherine’s brother and sister-in-law, so serena was able to grow up with her cousin. of course, katherine’s brother and sister-in-law knew that serena was katherine’s step-daughter, but their son theodore didn’t, so he was very protective of his cousin. there was many times, of course, that serena wanted to tell theo that they weren’t really cousins, but she never did, because she didn’t want to lose him.
and a little after their 11th birthdays, both serena and theo got their acceptance letters to hogwarts. traveling with their parents, the two cousins were so happy that they would still be going to school together in the fall and that they got to experience the magical world for the first time, outside of what they knew from their parents. it was all fun and games for serena and theo until they got to king cross station. when their parents told them that they would have to run through a wall to get onto platform 9 ¾, the two looked uncertainly at each other before grasping each other’s hand and running through the wall together. once they landed on the platform, they waited excitedly for their parents to join them.
hogwarts years:
year 1;; once their parents joined them on platform 9 ¾, serena and theo put their trunks onto the hogwarts express and climbed aboard after giving all four adults tight hugs and begging them to write every other day. after the door was closed behind them, serena turned to her cousin and saw the same look in his eyes that she was sure was in her eyes. it was a look of being scared and uncertain about what the school year was going to hold for them. after waving to their parents until the train turned the corner, serena led the way to find a compartment for the two of them to sit in.
while searching for an empty compartment, serena and theo passed one that had 4 kids already talking and laughing, two boys and two girls, all of whom looked to be about the same age as serena and theo. smiling at the thought of hopefully making new friends as the year went on, serena continued walking for another minute or two before stopping and opening the door to an empty compartment. taking the seat next to the window on one side of the compartment, serena let out a sigh. this was going to be the first time of seven that she and theo would be heading off to school without their parents with them. the thought scared serena a little bit because she was definitely the kind of girl that was shy and would freak out if her parents weren’t with her. but after settling into her seat, with theo sitting across from her, serena started to relax. soon after leaning her head against the window, serena fell asleep. it was something that she hated doing when it was just her and theo cause she always felt like she was leaving him with nothing to do, and no one to talk to.
a little while later, serena wasn’t completely sure how long she had been asleep, she was woken up by the clattering of something from the corridor outside of the compartment. looking over at theo, who was quickly trying to get some money out of his pocket, serena knew that it had to be the candy trolley that her parents had mentioned. with a small smile on her face at her cousin’s excitement, serena grabbed her little purse that had fallen to the floor while she had slept. taking out some of her own money, serena opened the compartment door for her cousin who was still struggling to get his money out. shaking her head a little bit, serena turned to the witch pushing the trolley and bought a box of bertie bott’s every flavor beans and a few chocolate frogs for herself while theo bought two cauldron cakes.
upon arriving at hogwarts, or more specifically, hogsmeade station, serena grabbed theo’s arm are pulled him out of the compartment. as she made her way through the crowded corridor, serena soon lost sight of her cousin and started to panic a little. looking around, she couldn’t see him anywhere. not knowing what else to do, serena started making her way back to the compartment hoping that’s where theo had gone. upon seeing him inside, serena let out a sigh of relief and pushed her way into the compartment. with a smile on her face, and a hint of red creeping up her cheeks, serena realized that in her haste to get off of the train, she had forgotten about their bags and stuff that they hadn’t stored in the luggage carriage.
grabbing her stuff, serena looked over at theo, linked arms with him and they made their way back into the now less crowded corridor and were able to get onto the platform without causing a scene. of course, serena noticed that a few people around them had raised eyebrows as they saw the two cousins walking along with their arms linked. side-glancing at theo, serena made a mental note to talk to her cousin the next day about telling people that they are cousins, but not explaining everything. not everyone at hogwarts needed to know that they weren’t related by blood.
after a slow ride across the lake from the platform to the boathouse, serena and theo finally made it to the castle and serena was in awe. not fully aware of her actions, serena probably squealed a few times and she reckons she most likely squeezed theo’s arm a few times, but she didn’t care. nothing really mattered to serena more than finally being at hogwarts with her cousin by her side. but that feeling didn’t last long. once both serena and theo had been sorted, serena didn’t know what to do. she had been sorted into hufflepuff, the house that katherine had been in, and theo had been sorted into slytherin, the house that serena’s dad had been in. and had serena and theo not been cousins, the thought of a possible future with theo might have crossed serena’s mind, but it didn’t. she was too upset about her and her cousin being in different houses.
throughout the year, serena and theo hung out whenever they could, but they both started to make friends in their respective houses. serena soon became best friends with another girl in her dorm, megan jones, and the two told each other everything. well, almost everything. serena didn’t mention that theo was only her cousin by marriage. she didn’t exactly lie to megan; she just opted not to tell the entire truth. because in truth, theodore nott was in fact, serena’s cousin. and to serena’s surprise, she took to most of her classes; her favorites being herbology, arithmancy and astronomy.
by the end of the school year, serena had managed to scrape up ‘a’s in all of her classes aside from herbology, arithmancy and astronomy, in which she received ‘e’s. of course, serena hadn’t expected to pass all of her classes with ‘o’s, but she was a little disappointed that she hadn’t even received one ‘o’. but, she wasn’t too disappointed; because with the end of the school year came the beginning of the summer, and with the beginning of summer came 24/7 time to spend with theo.
as serena boarded the hogwarts express at the end of her first year, she looked around the platform trying to spot theo somewhere. unfortunately, she couldn’t find him. after about 5 minutes or so of megan pulling on serena’s arm, serena finally gave up her search and followed her friend to a compartment. as they passed some of the already occupied compartments, serena finally spotted theo in one… but he wasn’t alone. theo was surrounded by his slytherin dorm mates and wasn’t even paying attention to what was going on in the corridor. trying to catch her cousin’s eye and failing, serena felt a burst of sadness, betrayal and disappointment. had she and theo really lost touch in the one school year that they weren’t at each other’s side every second of every day? with a slight shake of her head to try and rid herself of the feelings of hurt she had from her cousin, serena looked over at megan and smiled, shooing her friend forward so that they could find a compartment of their own.
as the train ride back to platform 9 ¾ went on, serena tried to not think about her cousin. but it was hard. yes, she had made friends in hufflepuff, but had she actually started to ignore the one person that she could talk to about anything and everything? or had she just been busy with her school work and her new friends to notice that theo had started to ignore her? either way, serena wasn’t putting on a happy façade at the moment… and megan noticed. and with as close as serena and megan had gotten over the past school year, serena couldn’t lie to her best friend. so, serena explained everything that had happened throughout the school year with her and theo. and, as fate would have it, as serena got to the end of her confession, theo showed up at the compartment door with a very apologetic look on his face.
folding her arms and sending him a small glare, serena motioned for him to come in. unfortunately, even with as much as serena was mad at theo, she cared about him too much to stay mad at him. as theo explained what had happened, serena stiff body became more relaxed and by the end of it, she was smiling again. noticing out of the corner of her eye that megan seemed a little uncomfortable, serena mentally smacked herself for not properly introducing the two of them. and for the rest of the train ride, serena, theo and megan talked and laughed and had a good time.
