Meet Seamus Finnigan and Lavender Brown. Both are Fifth Year Gryffindors, and have been friends since they began to attend Hogwarts together as little eleven year-olds. Both have harbored feelings for each other, but neither have spoken or acted on those feelings, except attending the Yule Ball together, which didn't make either of them notice that they would be good as a couple. Both don't believe Harry's crackpot story of Voldemort returning, and that brought them closer. For a while, at least. Seamus discovers that Lavender joined Dumbledore's Army, lead by Harry Potter himself, and becomes infuriated. He becomes upset with Lavender, and they fight and argue. They stop talking to each other, both angry and upset.
Meet Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Both Fifth Year Gryffindors, and best friends. Hermione has always secretly fancied Ron, Ron has felt the same. Neither have spoken a word about it. After their huge fight at last year's Yule Ball, Hermione and Ron have patched things up, and although they bicker as usual, they've grown closer. The two are on the same side for the most part, and things are finally beginning to go well for the both of them. In fact, they are coming close to telling that they like each other, and things could not be going better for them.
Suddenly, everything changes. Hermione catches Lavender getting very, very close to Ron, and Hermione does not like that. Hermione and Lavender have never really been friends, Lavender disliking Hermione, Hermione disliking Lavender for their respective reasons. But the two had began to patch things up, and start a slow friendship. Seamus is jealous of Ron and Lavender becoming close. Hermione is also jealous, and is upset with Ron for turning his back on her all the time to be with Lavender. Lavender finally has the upper hand on Hermione because Hermione has never been jealous of Lavender, and now, having Ron to herself, Lavender is finally the winner. She pursues him harder, knowing it will hurt both Hermione and Seamus, and the two begin dating.
Hermione is infuriated and refuses to speak to Ron. She doesn't seek out Harry, knowing he will not be able to help and she also does not want to burden him. Seamus is off doing his own thing, refusing to speak to Lavender, obviously heartbroken and betrayed. Hermione finds Cormac McLaggen awful and a bit of a player, and although she tries to deny his requests for dating, Hermione finds that he is pursuing her with every thread of his being and she gives the boy a chance. Not a date, but she hangs out with him more. That, of course, sets off Ron, causing a major fight between them. Lavender's appeal is wearing off of Ron, who finds that she is not the type of girl he wants to date (mainly, she isn't Hermione).
Ron wants out of his relationship with Lavender. He wants to be with Hermione, realizing this when he sees her and Cormac sitting together a lot and talking and laughing. Lavender realizes she is losing Ron and clings to him harder, trying so hard to keep him around while knowing that he really isn't into her anymore. Finally, Lavender lets go, and (like in the Half Blood Prince) plans to make his head explode at breakfast. Will Seamus and Lavender get together, or at least patch things up? Will Hermione stay close to Cormac, the one who is trying so desperately to keep her, or will she turn to Ron, who is obviously the one she has truly wanted since she became friends with him?
