physical description:
HAIR STYLE/COLOR:
When left loose in its natural state, Selene's hair cascades in the most subtle waves of raven black to the middle of her back. For the most part, Selene tends to pull her hair back into a loose tail or messy bun when at work, while leaving it loose whenever she is at home or traveling.
EYE COLOR:
Selene's eyes are a deep brown shade that is often confused as being black. Upon closer inspection however, one can tell that her eyes are a deep chocolate shade, with flecks of a somewhat lighter brown within. Her eyes are a round almond shape, framed by long lashes and elegent brows that are either very well maintained, or naturally expressive.
DISTINGUISHING MARKS:
Scars:
Selene proudly bears a long, ragged scar from her left shoulder down to her right hip that, although not often seen due to her clothes, is occasionally revealed by backless shirts or dresses. The scar is no secret she seeks to hide and is in fact a badge of honor as far as she is concerned. On her upper right arm nearing the shoulder is a small circular scar which seems to have little or no significance to Selene, though she never speaks of it.
Tattoos:
At her left ankle there is what at first glance appears to be a black anklet. The tattoo encircles her ankle and is delicately designed to give just that impression. Dangling from the black strand of painstakingly drawn fine chain links are the three runic symbols of her mother, father and younger brother's horoscope signs. Her mother's Cancer rests in the middle above Selene's foot and to either side of it are crescent moons facing one another. On the far side of the left moon dangles her younger brother's Scorpio, while on the far side of the right moon is her father's Gemini.
OVERALL :
Standing at 5'8" and weighing in just under a hundred and fifty pounds, Selene is a very well maintained woman. Being just a touch taller than average, there is not a single aspect of her which is not toned by grueling exercise regimes and intense training sessions. Although she gives the appearance of a beautiful debutante with her curvy hips and lush hair, Selene is nothing if not a hardened fighter.
CLOTHING STYLE:
Selene has a distinctly medieval style of dress, in that she almost always wears some form of corset or bustier over her blouses. These all tend to be spelled with various protective charms that dispel the effects of common hexes and jinxes, and tend to range in the dark blues, reds and greens. Selene will never wear gold, but is partial to silver, bronze and hand-crafted accessories. Though she is known to wear long skirts from time to time, it is also well known among the office she always has pants beneath them and an array of knives hidden somewhere within the folds. She never wears heels, even when attending parties where she dons an incredibly rare dress, as she deems them completely impractical and difficult to fight in. Selene always wears clothes that grant her full maneuverability, as she dislikes taking the risk of being constricted by some pretty little outfit when she could look nice and still drop a wicked kick.

overall personality:
Selene is an exceptionally dedicated woman who takes her job very seriously. She was raised from a young age to know and understand the inner workings of her mind, body, magic and soul, which has resulted in her often seeming far wiser than her 35 years give her credit for. Although not a particularly ambitious woman, Selene's intense determination to see Dark Wizards put away along with the way she handled her fellow Aurors when placed in a team earned her a reputation as a strong and independent woman with a good sense of control and leadership capability. She was offered a chance to promote herself and, as her goals rest solely on the permanent downfall of Voldemort, being in a position to oversee those fighting him, prepare active battle plans and be a powerful participant in the war was all the incentive she needed to accept the position.
Although a hardened soldier, Selene does at times wish for the freedom to live a more tranquil life. There are days when she wonders if she will ever marry and have children of her own, if she will ever settle in and raise a family. She knows that as long as the war wages, this is an impossible dream, and so she locks it away deep inside her heart and prays that by the time all this is over, it won't be too late for her to find a happiness unattached to the satisfaction of a job well done.
skills:
• Martial Arts: If the first thing that popped into mind was Muggle karate, you're only slightly off the mark. Selene is a practitioner of kalarippayattu or Kalari Payat, an ancient form of Indian martial art which is primarily practiced in the Sri Lankan region. Kalari Payat includes strikes, kicks, grappling, preset forms, weaponry and healing methods, and the particular form Selene studies places particular emphasis on empty-hand techniques. She began studying this under her maternal Uncle at the age of seven, and it is an integral part of her life. Because of her physical fighting capabilities and her knowledge of an old Muggle form of healing, Selene had a considerable advantage over her fellow Aurors when it came time to the physical examinations, and she fast proved to be as quick with her feet and hands as she was with a wand. She has installed an optional training program for Aurors to participate in if they wish an additional leg up out in the field, that teaches more advanced holds and strikes than the general Auror program, so that even wandless, Aurors will remain formidable.
• Champion Duelist: One does not rise far within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement if they are not deadly to cross wands with. Although her skills would not be on par with master duelists such as Albus Dumbledore, Selene is more than capable of handling such talented Death Eaters as Bellatrix Lestrange in a close match. Selene is quick with a wand and has the habit of mixing Charms, Defense, and a touch of Dark Arts into her fighting style, making her incredibly hard to predict. She doesn't waste time and casts the first spells on her lips in rapid succession. Her signature move tends to be a fast-fire Blasting Curse followed by the Disarming Charm, so that by the time her opponent summons a shield, they've already lost their wand. If they're even lucky enough to raise a shield in time.
• Occlumency: Although completely rubbish with Legilimency, Selene adapted easily to the skill of Occlumency due to the fact it is not so far a stretch from meditation. As a practitioner of Kalari Payat, meditation was a part of her life even before she was inducted into her studies. Although her method is a bit more obscure than most Occlumens practitioners, Selene is capable of shielding her thoughts from basic access. If an active cast of Legilimens were to be made, she could thrust the opponent from her mind, but there is a higher chance of breaking through in this manner.
• Animagus: A small, slender white cat with no discernable markings whatsoever, and bright green eyes. The exact Yang to Celeste's Ying.
patronus:
A panther, in memory of her father who claimed it as the family totem.
boggart:
Mangled bodies of loved ones.
secrets:
The quartz crystal Selene wears around her neck at all times is both an Emergency Portkey and a phial holding a deadly toxin which she can either utilize on a single enemy, or herself should she be captured and unable to use the Portkey due to barriers.
Selene has had her eye on several wizards over the years, but her ambition and dedication to her job kept her from perusing relationships. Now, with the war in full swing, she is careful not to look at all.
Selene scorns the majority of the Wizarding World for its treatment of Harry Potter. She does not for a moment believe the child can defeat a Dark master who has been studying magic since before his birth, and she finds it despicable how often the world will turn on the boy when he does something other than sit like a little puppet and let them pull his strings.

overall history:
Selene was born to two rather unlikely parents. Nicodaemus Asphodael was an aristocratic Ministry tycoon who lived for politics, prestige, and power. He was a beautiful man with thick chestnut curls and a strong jaw, deep brown eyes and a surprisingly melodious laugh for a man so openly pretentious. Tamwyn Rowan, on the other hand, was a very spiritual woman who paid homage to the same gods and goddesses that Merlin once answered to. Her line was a dwindling one, but the Rowans had always been connected to ancient druidism and were careful to instill the old ways into every new generation. Tamwyn's family were a gypsy sort, but her particular branch was undeniably pure-blooded and for some reason, she absolutely adored Nicodaemus despite the fact he was all but her polar opposite.
Cyelen was eleven by the time Selene was old enough to join him and their Uncle Lleiliwyn in actively learning Kalari Payat, and Beljard was born at almost the exact same time. Lleilwyn had mastered the art under his father, whose father had picked it up on a trip to India and decided to enlist his young son into the fold. It was something the Rowan's felt was both practical and wise to learn, regardless of war or peace. Keeping one's body, mind, spirit and magic cleansed and healthy could only be beneficial in any time. Although Nicodaemus was mildly scandalized by his son learning Muggle fighting technique - and then his daughter no less! - Tamwyn always managed to mollify him in some way.
Despite their differences, Nicodaemus and Tamwyn loved each other quite deeply, and took great pride and pleasure in raising their three children. Seeing Cyelen and Selene to Hogwarts were two of the best moments of their lives, but it was shortly after Cyelen graduated and Selene was in the summer of her third year that a dark shadow fell over the family. Cyelen had taken to befriending several individuals who had very secular views and, for all Nicodaemus was a proudly arrogant pure-blood politician, he had never been a supporter of killing Muggleborns. Cyelen brought home a few of his associates, who proceeded to try and convince the Asphodael family toward the Dark Lord's cause. What Tamwyn was unaware of was that Nicodaemus had declined this offer already once before; all she saw and heard was the way her husband was differed to, as though he had already joined this despicable cause. She confronted him on it then and there, and Nicodaemus made it very clear to her and his son's friends that there would never be acceptance in his home for murderous ideals.
This sparked a large fight between Cyelen and Nicodaemus, which resulted in the eldest son leaving home and a dire threat being made on the entire family. Selene, not understanding, simply laughed it off as a tantrum on Cyelen's part and anticipated he would return and apologize soon enough. It took two years for Selene to accept that her brother had left the family for good, seeking some great and dark glory following the Dark Lord. She didn't know how she felt about it, or how to accept it, until the night of what would have been Cyelen's twenty-first birthday. It was the day before she would have left for her final year at Hogwarts, and Beljard was sleeping over at a friends for the last time that summer. It was the day when Selene vowed to do everything in her power to see the Dark Lord destroyed.
Cyelen returned on that day with an ultimatum for his mother and sister. Join the cause, or join Nicodaemus. When Tamwyn demanded to know what her son meant by that, three individuals in the cloaked regalia of Death Eaters arrived, and dropped into their midst the mangled body of the Asphodael patriarch. Selene could barely begin accepting that the destroyed body before her was her fathers when she heard Tamwyn say something in another language. When she spoke again, she renounced Cyelen as her son before promptly killing one of his companions. Cyelen and the other two instantly made to attack Tamwyn in turn, and Selene made an instant choice. Joining with her mother, she fought against the Death Eaters and disarmed one with a spell before slamming the base of her hand into his nose in a precise manner that resulted in the cartilage getting lodged in his brain, killing him as promptly as a Killing Curse would have.
Unfortunately she had not anticipated fighting Cyelen, who cast a curse at her before she cold fully dodge, scarring her arm. Her mother was still bringing down the other Death Eater when Selene and her brother found themselves fighting viciously with one another not to practice grappling, but with the full intent of being the one to come out alive. Selene had no idea how long they fought, though to this day she remembers her mother yelling at them to stop, before suddenly the silence and the feel of Cyelen going limp in her arms. She did not know how long it was before she realized her mother had cast some sort of spell on him, and that she had not killed him, but when she knew he was alive, all she could do was sob.
Tamwyn called the Ministry, and they took Cyelen and her father away, as well as the fallen Death Eaters. Selene was granted the first week off of seventh year to mourn for her father and console her younger brother who was deliberately led to believe that Nicodaemus and Cyelen both were dead from the fight. To this day Selene has no idea what her mother did to Cyelen or where he is now, nor can she bring herself to care. The Dark Lord had already murdered Cyelen - the bright, laughing boy who loved his father had died the moment he joined Voldemort, and whoever remained now was just an unlucky ghost.
Selene applied for the Auror's program immediately after leaving Hogwarts, and underwent three years of training before becoming a fully fledged Auror. She fought valiantly alongside Frank and Alice Longbottom and other members of the old Order, and was honored to do so. She took a curse for an Auror who was left in tragic grief after watching his fiance murdered during one of their raids, and though she was glad to save him she regretted that it had been at all necessary. She placed a petition for an end to fraternization amongst Aurors and that those Aurors who had lovers or family in the ranks be separated from each other so such things would not repeat themselves. The petition only partially worked, and while the old generation remained together, newer hires were forced to obey the new scripture.
After the Dark Lord's first fall, Selene did not stop or rest. She continued to hunt down his followers and any who flaunted the law, being among those who believed that Voldemort was out there, waiting to return. For sixteen years she remained dedicated to the M.L.E. and never once thought of marriage or children - not until closer to the end. By the time the thoughts occurred, terrible things were happening at Hogwarts to one Harry James Potter, and Selene knew it was only a matter of time before the Dark Lord came back. So she pushed all thoughts of family away and continued to mind political shifts and gambits, wayward Dark Arts users and waited for the inevitable. Now that he's back and the Ministry is no longer trying to deny it like a bunch of optimistic imbeciles, she is glad she didn't waste her time or go soft. There would be time for family when the war was over, and if not...if she failed to survive or there was just nothing left of her to raise a family with, well.
Everyone has a regret or two.

The Assistant Head of Magical Law Enforcement was an exceptionally dedicated woman, who had risen through the ranks in a surprisingly quiet and unassuming manner. As an Auror, Selene had turned heads, changed policies and campaigned against family and couples on teams together until a bill had been passed by the Minister. As an Auror, Selene had been known for her wicked spellwork and her incredible physical abilities. She had been respected and feared, and when the position of Assistant Head was one day offered to her, it came as little surprise to the rest of the Auror Office. What did come as a great surprise was Selene's desire to keep her position hidden from the general public. The announcement of a new Assistant Head was made quietly, and her name was never mentioned in the papers. As far as the wizarding community at large was concerned, Selene Asphodael was still no more than an Auror. This suited Selene perfectly when it had been decided a year ago that she take a position at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as an added security measure. She had no wish for her true position to be known to any there, though eventually she had divulged it to Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape as part of a private exchange of secrets. This year had been trying for Selene, as the Carrows were hardly fond of the Auror in their midst, but a tense neutrality was forced between them by the Headmaster - for now. Moving gracefully through the halls, Selene left the Hospital Wing in favor of patrolling the halls. She had not truly anticipated anything - most of the students were very subdued thanks to the Carrows - but she had needed to escape the wing in a fit of unusual restlessness. As such, when a young voice cried out 'Stupefy!' Selene was instantly running in that direction, her legs carrying her with ease to the edge of the second floor banister. Not bothering with the time of stairs, Selene placed one hand on the banister and jumped over it, landing easily on the ground floor below, her legs bending gracefully to take her weight. Rising, Selene shot a smile at the shocked forth years who'd just witnessed Hogwarts assistant healer do something so absurdly dangerous, and weaved her way quickly to where a Gryffindor girl was engaged in confrontation with a Slytherin boy. Once in earshot, Selene used the calm yet commanding tone she often utilized when ordering a fellow Auror to report on a mission, recalling the children's names from their medical files. "Miss Lucrezia. If you would kindly return Mr. Kinzel's wand," she began, "I would very much like to know why two students are engaging in a magical confrontation in the halls, when such events are reasonably forbidden. Either of you care to explain?" She asked, her tone stating quite clearly that an explanation was required. Tag: Zoey & Damien Words: 682 |

OR:
Her back still searing from the remnants of Emmanuel's curse, Selene stepped into the Head Auror's office with a grim expression on her face. One of her team had perished in the most recent raid - a loss she could not condone in good conscience. Isabelle had been more than just a good fighter, she had been a friend, and the report Selene knew she had to give pained her for many reasons.
Selene prided herself in the ability to lead her team through difficult situations, to take over when necessary and to take orders when it was her turn to do so. One of the things she always stressed was the precise statement pounded into the heads of every single trainee until they either quit, or made it into the ranks of Aurors and discovered just how important that lesson was. Constant vigilance saved lives and today was just further proof of that fact.
It had been such a stupid mistake - such a pointless reason to die. If Isabelle had just been paying attention this travesty would never have come to pass. Instead of following Richard's every move, she should have been mindful of the fight around her. Richard himself was alive because he had the faith to defend himself and believe Isabelle could do the same without him watching.
Selene suppressed a wince as she sat down, recalling the way Isabelle had cried out at the last moment, drawing Richard's attention from his opponents. Dezra had been quick enough to pick up the slack as Richard abandoned his post in favor of kneeling beside his fallen fiance. That moment of grief could have - would have - cost him his life if Selene had not bodily thrown herself between him and the curse, knocking Richard down and taking the curse in the back. Had it hit Richard in the face as intended, she would have lost two teammates tonight.
Now, Selene had to tell her boss in full detail precisely why they had lost a member of their team, sent three to St. Mungo's and would be allowing a fourth grievance leave. It was as she detailed her intervention that she felt the soft pull behind her eyelids that indicated someone was attempting to access her mind. With a soft sigh, Selene didn't bother to call her boss out on it - although by rights she could have - and instead simply dropped back into her own mind.
The meadow was calm behind her eyes, vast and warm as the wind blew gently across the grass. This vision was what met almost anyone who tried to penetrate Selene's mind and it was one they would have to travel through to find access to her memories. That travel was usually where Selene stopped them, but today she merely waved at the calm blue sky and filled it with her memory. From this particular angle, she was able to watch herself almost as though in a pensieve. Her Uncle LLieliwyn preferred to term it an exotic way to Occlude, but to Selene much of it was merely meditation and a firm control of her mind.
Once the memory of her own healing after the arrests and escapes was exhausted, Selene politely nudged her boss back toward his own mind. When she blinked, she found herself facing a thin and almost sheepish smile, before she was told to write out the rest of her report from St. Mungo's. Although she had received treatment on the field, the Head Auror wished to ensure there would be no lasting damage from whatever spell Emmanuel had cast. In the meantime, Richard's grievance leave would be processed and a new team would be formed.
Accepting the dismissal for what it was, Selene rose, but not without a final word. "I have never approved of family members being placed on the same team, sir," She stated slowly, not wishing to offend but determined to be heard. "I would advise you not to permit it any longer. I have felt from the beginning that it had the potential to lead to fatal mistakes and this incident is a bleak and unfortunate proof to the matter. Please think on it sir. We can't afford for this to keep happening."
With a polite nod of her head, Selene slipped from the office and made her way to the Atrium, where she would Floo to St. Mungo's and have her back looked at. Whatever happened after today would determine her course within the M.L.E., of that Selene was certain. She simply could not continue working with high risk teams, but she had no intention of leaving the Department. She would have plenty of time to think while she wrote out her report from a hospital bed.
